A Very English Scandal premiering on BBC One

Three-part mini series, A Very English Scandal starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whinshaw is premiering May 18 on BBC One, with Amazon Prime expecting to run the series in the US in late June. The series penned by Russell T. Davies is based on the 2016 book by John Preston, and will fully dramatise the 1976-79 Jeremy Thorpe scandal, with events that lead up to it.

The 1976-79 was the period from which Liberal Party leader and MP Jeremy Thorpe’s affair with Norman Josiffe came to public attention in the media. They had met in 1961 with Josiffe was a 21-year-old stable boy, and they carried on a relationship for a number a years, but by the late 60s, Thorpe has been elected leader of the Liberal Party and marries. Other MPs attempt to help Thorpe and keep Josiffe silent. In the early 70s, fearing exposure, Thorpe contemplated and at one point arranged to have Josiffe murdered.
