Colton Haynes exposing the homophobia he’s faced in Hollywood

December 18, 2021 · By

In a recent article for Vulture, openly gay actor Colton Haynes opens up about his struggle with the homophobia he faced when starting out in Hollywood. The actor famous for staying deeply closeted despite all evidence to the contrary (like just how well he does Halloween… oh and that XY Magazine cover).

Colton said the hints he received when he moved to LA, particularly about his mannerisms and posture, implying he appeared too gay. After a failed attempt to land an agent, he spent weeks with a voice coach and suppressing his true self.

Despite eventually landing roles and working his way from CSI to the Gates, Teen Wolf and finally the Arrow, keeping his gay secret was proving too much for his health. His doctor told him his secret was killing him.

In a post on Instagram Colton shared his Vulture piece receiving tremendous support, including from Jesse Tyler Fergerson (Modern Family) who wrote, “Thank you for writing this! I’m so proud of you & happy to call you a friend!” His Teen Wolf co-star Holland Roden wrote, “You have been the consummate inspiration for your friends Colton – truly. We love you to the moon and back.”
