Love, Simon cinema release date confirmed for March 16

Upcoming coming of age film Love, Simon has been given a release date — March 16, 2018. Out writer, director, tv producer Greg Berlanti’s screen adaption of the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda will star Nick Robinson as Simon, the titular character, a closeted gay 17-year-old high school student who’s forced to come out when blackmailed by a classmate who finds Simon’s emails to another closeted student.

Based on the debut novel by American author Becky Albertalli, the book was released in April 2015 and picked up by Fox2000 later that year. Late in 2016 Greg Berlanti, known for his work on Dawson’s Creek, Everwood and more recently with creating the Arrowverse shows of The Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, was hired to direct the adaption. Filming took place in March and April 2017 after the principal cast had been named.

Judging from the trailer, this is going to be one beautiful, poignant, and emotional coming-out story. The story also echoes a similar plot line to Speech & Debate, particularly the elements of blackmailing closeted students and the drama of high school. However Love, Simon focuses on one student’s struggle with his sexuality and the pressure to come out not just to classmates but his family.

Nick Robinson’s star has been rising since he landed on critics’ radar with The Kings of Summer, though wider audiences will recognize him from The 5th Wave with Chloe Moretz, and Jurassic World. Love, Simon also stars Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Tony Hale and Colton Haynes. Several cast members come from various Berlanti projects including Kid Flash (bi-Australian actor/musician Keiynan Lonsdale), and now out Arrow star Colton Haynes.

Among the many stellar songs on the film’s soundtrack, Troye Sivan contributed “Strawberries & Cigarettes”. The full album will also be released on March 16.
