No second season for cancelled Generation

September 15, 2021 · By

In a statement released by HBO Max the network announced that they “will not be moving forward with a second season of Generation.” Spelling the end of the single-season show.

The statement continued, “we are very proud to have partnered with Zelda and Daniel Barnz to faithfully and authentically represent LGBTQ youth with such a diverse group of characters and layered stories. We thank them and our wonderfully gifted cast for all their hard work and collaboration.”

Generation (or Genera+ion) began streaming March 11, 2021 with three episodes, then released the remaining 13 episodes in two parts weekly until mid-July. The teen dramedy follows a group of students at an affluent Orange County, California high school as they navigate the broad spectrum of sexuality in 2021.

The series starred Justice Smith as confident out student Chester, Uly Schlesinger as bisexual Nathan, Chloe East as Naomi, and Chase Sui Wonders as Riley. In many ways the cancellation comes as a blow to progress with queer casting, and to affirming actors coming out.
