Not Special enough to get renewed

April 9, 2021 · By

Sad news out of Netflix, the original series by comedian Ryan O’Connell has been cancelled and won’t see further seasons after the second one drops on May 20.

Special is a semi-autobiographical series that tells the story of Ryan, “a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and finally go after the life he wants.” Based on Ryan’s memoir “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves”, the first season premiered on April 12, 2019 and consisted of 8 shorter-length episodes. Season two will conclude the series with 8 more episodes closer to 30 minutes in length. Nominated for numerous awards, Special didn’t avoid the Netflix chopping block.

Ryan was supported on screen by a solid well-rounded cast including Jessica Hecht as his mom, Punam Patel as Ryan’s friend and co-worker Kim, and Patrick Fabian as a Phil, love-interest for Ryan’s mom. We can expect a lot of guest stars this next season, and it seems a love-interest for Ryan.
