The next season of Netflix’s Sex Education will include two new trans characters according to reports the series producers are casting for the roles. Returning for a fourth season, with casting only just now taking place, shooting is not expected to start until into next year.

The British teen dramedy revolving around the students at Moordale Secondary School as they learn and discover all things sex and sexuality, and of course making terrible mistakes for love. Sex Education has featured gay, lesbian and bisexual characters for the start, including main cast members, and introduced two non-binary characters in recent seasons. Now season four promises to be that much queerer.

According to a tweet from non-binary series writer Krishna Istha, the casting call has gone out to find Abbi and Kent.

“Abbi is a young trans woman with a ’90s Winona Rider vibe, who is confident and self-assured in her gender identity,” the first casting description reads. “Abbi is the leader of her group and the queen bee of her college — every girl either wants to be like her, or be friends with her. She’s sunny, magnetic, generous and loyal.”

In addition to Abbi is Kent, Abbi’s transmasculine boyfriend who is “goofy, forgetful, and a great listener.”

“They’re the ultimate power couple — they’ve been together for a while and are the epitome of ‘couple goals,’ everyone loves them. Kent is as sure about being one of the popular kids as Abbi, but he knows himself and feels quietly confident about his final year at college.”

Aside from the character reveals, the casting call gives the time frame for the season four shooting schedule, with filming in Wales taking place between April and November 2022. Given the need to edit and drop the entire season in one go, a January 2023 release may seem too hopeful.
